I completed the baseline CT and MRI scans on Tuesday evening. As I posted on Facebook the other day, "Just for the record, 'Berry Smoothie' is slightly misrepresenting the contents of this bottle. It should actually read, 'Artificial blueberry flavored liquified chalk beverage commonly used as torture device'". Honestly, that was the worst part of the whole scan experience. My utmost respect to those who have to drink that nasty concoction often. I will be praying with compassion for them now!
We saw Dr. Andtbacka today to discuss the scan results and any remaining questions we had regarding the possible additional surgery to remove the remaining groin lymph nodes. The scans were clear. They saw nothing of concern and have a good set of baseline images with which to compare the scans I will have every 4 months for the next 2 years. Fortunately, the MRI is only annual. We were relieved to hear those results and followed up with some clarifying questions about a Melanoma lymph node removal study that was just published in June. Essentially, the (very extensive) study showed that the outcome for the group of people who underwent the additional removal of the lymph nodes didn't have a significantly statistical increase in survival rates than those who did not remove the nodes. Additionally, those who had the surgery were at risk for some serious side-effects. Either plan will involve regular scans.
We went ahead and scheduled scans for January, with the understanding that if we decide in the next few days (or even few months) to do the surgery, we can still do that. Our plan is to spend time praying and digesting the information. We are confident that God will give us His direction and perfect peace about His plan for me.
For now, things look good. I am slowly gaining back my strength and resuming "normal" activities. I hope to start lengthier walks (at the park and around the neighborhood) soon, especially now that the weather is cooling off! God has been very gracious with His healing hand. Of course, as you all know, there is always the chance of the Melanoma recurring and/or moving on to other internal organs. We aren't going to dwell or fret about statistics, but instead choose to trust the One who holds the future. He continues to demonstrate that our HOPE in Him is not misplaced.
Praises:
- Clear scans!
- Continued healing of my skin graft.
Prayer Requests:
- God's confirmation regarding additional lymph node removal.
- For God to continue to use this journey for His purposes and His glory.
